GOOGLE NEWS INITIATIVE (GNI) INNOVATION CHALLENGE

As part of this program, the GNI will fund a set of projects from around the world that meet specified criteria, with the intent of producing learning and thought leadership to share with the wider industry

Eligible Projects

All ideas are welcome but we are requiring all projects to have clear indicators showing the impact of the project from a user perspective and/or from a business perspective (eg: audience indicators, business plan when relevant). Successful projects will need to be delivered within one year.

We encourage innovative projects - focused on but not limited to- the areas below:

Projects will be evaluated against four main criteria:

  1. Impact on the news ecosystem: Projects should demonstrate potential for significant positive impact on the creation of new revenue streams and/or change the way people consume digital news.
  2. Innovation: Preferred projects will be innovative (use of technology, business model, new reader engagement approaches etc) and be transformative for the applicant and for users.
  3. Feasibility: Projects should demonstrate clear indicators and metrics, or even a business plan when relevant, and set out key risks and mitigation steps.
  4. Inspiration: How can the project help news organizations learn from each other? Willingness to share knowledge, open source code or/and to contribute to the improvement of the ecosystem overall.

The Middle East, Africa and Turkey GNI Innovation Challenge is open to organizations of every size, including freelancers and sole traders, that aim to produce innovative, original journalism and to enlighten citizens with trustworthy journalistic content, whose projects focus on encouraging a more sustainable news ecosystem.
Established publishers, online-only players, news startups, publisher consortia and local industry associations are all eligible to apply. Incorporated organizations must be incorporated in one of the eligible countries (see below) in the Middle East, Africa & Turkey region. Unincorporated organizations must be registered in the region (or, if unregistered, have their principal place of business there).

Head of Programs
JOB PURPOSE: A key member of the Country Management Team, the Head of Programs primary responsibility includes the strategic development and management of the country program. S/he supports Oxfam’s impact locally, regionally, and globally through ensuring program alignment to the key strategic objectives and program standards. Job Requirements:

  • At least 10 years of proven program management experience, with a minimum of 5 years of senior management experience.

Gender Coordinator
JOB PURPOSE: The Gender  Coordinator is expected to provide high-quality support to different units of the Country Office and to partners according to Oxfam’s standards and contribute to Oxfam’s global and regional learning aspirations through capacity building, coordination, mentoring and monitoring, making sure that Oxfam’s Response meets the gender minimum standards as well as promotes women’s voice, participation and leadership. BBC STEP INTO TECH SCHEME
The BBC Step into Tech training course is the ideal opportunity for women wanting to move into a career in Software Engineering.  This in-depth course provides the fundamental skills needed to kick start a career in the sector.

This course is ideal for women who may be returning to work after a break, college leavers and career changers:  anyone that is motivated for a career in software Engineering but need to learn the core skills first.
APPLICATION PROCESS INFORMATION
  • You will first complete a questionnaire and you will need to upload your most up to date CV.
  •  Once all completed applications have been received, we will then send you a coding exercise to try. (You are not expected to complete all of these exercises but we would just like you to give them a go)
  •  We will then be looking to hold a Discovery Evening event, which will give you the opportunity to come in and get further insight into the scheme. We will also try to answer any question that you have about the scheme. (We understand that not all applicants we will be able to attend this event, therefore it will not go against you if you cannot attend this event)
  •  If you fully completed your application and meet all of the requirements for the scheme, we will then send you an email, which will have a video interview link on it, for you to complete.
  • You will have visibility of the questions and will have time to prep your answers before recording them. (Please make sure you have access to a computer or laptop, which has a Camera on it for you to complete this stage successfully) the scheme managers will assess your video interviews and will decide who will make it through to the face-to-face interview stage.

Empowering schools and teachers globally to educate children on the SDGs
Global Schools is an initiative led by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network - Youth Initiative (SDSN Youth) in support of UNESCO’s Global Action Program on Education for Sustainable Development (GAP-ESD). The vision of the program is to generate interest about sustainable development in schools in an effort to educate and engage students with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to encourage them to prioritize these goals in their lifestyles, behaviors, education and professional careers. In working with educators, the program tries to deliver its mission by transforming learning environments globally and making schools the hubs of education and leadership on SDGs, ultimately becoming vehicles for empowering and mobilizing students and young people to help implement the SDGs in their communities.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

Primary criteria:

At the time of applying for this role:
Candidate MUST possess a good command of the English language.
Candidate MUST have excellent public speaking skills, be capable of communicating well with key stakeholders and partners.
