News and Opportunities


As part of this program, the GNI will fund a set of projects from around the world that meet specified criteria, with the intent of producing learning and thought leadership to share with the wider industry

Eligible Projects

All ideas are welcome but we are requiring all projects to have clear indicators showing the impact of the project from a user perspective and/or from a business perspective (eg: audience indicators, business plan when relevant). Successful projects will need to be delivered within one year.

We encourage innovative projects - focused on but not limited to- the areas below:
Business Models
Projects will be evaluated against four main criteria:

  1. Impact on the news ecosystem: Projects should demonstrate potential for significant positive impact on the creation of new revenue streams and/or change the way people consume digital news.
  2. Innovation: Preferred projects will be innovative (use of technology, business model, new reader engagement approaches etc) and be transformative for the applicant and for users.
  3. Feasibility: Projects should demonstrate clear indicators and metrics, or even a business plan when relevant, and set out key risks and mitigation steps.
  4. Inspiration: How can the project help news organizations learn from each other? Willingness to share knowledge, open source code or/and to contribute to the improvement of the ecosystem overall.
Application Eligibility Requirements

The Middle East, Africa and Turkey GNI Innovation Challenge is open to organizations of every size, including freelancers and sole traders, that aim to produce innovative, original journalism and to enlighten citizens with trustworthy journalistic content, whose projects focus on encouraging a more sustainable news ecosystem.
Established publishers, online-only players, news startups, publisher consortia and local industry associations are all eligible to apply. Incorporated organizations must be incorporated in one of the eligible countries (see below) in the Middle East, Africa & Turkey region. Unincorporated organizations must be registered in the region (or, if unregistered, have their principal place of business there).

JOB PURPOSE: To align programme strategy with global campaigns, develop advice on Country pubic engagement and wider influencing objectives across all areas of programs in line with Oxfam Country Strategy. The job holder is responsible for leading the strategic thinking and implementation of Oxfam Nigeria’s campaign, advocacy, media and communication platforms to promote programs and change policies in delivering on Oxfam’s World Wide Influencing Strategy (WIN) to address the root causes of poverty.  This will include managing high-level external stakeholder relationships including funding partners, media; the middle class, leading internal strategic thinking about how to integrate stakeholders wherever possible and devise ambitious media and communication strategies and mobilize the power of people against poverty.

Job Requirements:
  • First degree in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Administration with a postgraduate degree in Development, Public Policy, Administration or a relevant subject
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience leading and providing strategic oversight of public engagement and influencing with the objective of bringing about policy and practice changes
  • Knowledge of Africa and global media; Ability to apply knowledge of internal and external environment to complex media and reputational issues.
  • Comprehensive understanding and experience of advocacy and campaigning tools and techniques
  • Demonstrable experience of working across complex organizations and managing internal and external stakeholders to get the best outcome.
  • In-depth understanding of the economic, political and social causes and dynamics of poverty, vulnerability and inequality and a familiarity with policy issues related to the creation or reduction of poverty, vulnerability and inequality

Head of Programs
JOB PURPOSE: A key member of the Country Management Team, the Head of Programs primary responsibility includes the strategic development and management of the country program. S/he supports Oxfam’s impact locally, regionally, and globally through ensuring program alignment to the key strategic objectives and program standards. S/he provides oversight for all program budgets and expenditure – over EUR 15m a year. The HOP collaborates with the Head of Influencing and Public engagement on policy and campaign issues.

Job Requirements:
  • Advanced Master degree in International Relations/ development studies, Public Administration, Economics, Project Management, humanitarian aid or other related topics.
  • At least 10 years of proven program management experience, with a minimum of 5 years of senior management experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience of development programs (agriculture, WASH, Gender), Advocacy/Campaigning and Humanitarian programs.
  • Demonstrable experience in managing multidisciplinary projects and programs with significant budgets, from different donors, medium-large scale projects including multi-year, transformative economic and social projects in a conflict context.
  • Experience in representing an organization with partners, government agencies, private sector organizations, legal advisors and donors at senior level: locally, regionally and globally ideally in West Africa region
  • Experience of managing complex change processes and relationships involving a wide range of both internal and external multi-cultural stakeholders; bring in and draw on a wide INGO and NGO network in Nigeria and/or the West Africa region
  • Experience of developing and managing complex budgets associated with donor and partner budgets
  • Leadership experience of (possibly) remote teams operating within an INGO context; has knowledge and experience of using coaching and team working to deliver.
  • Understanding of managing security, health and safety and risk within an INGO.

Gender Coordinator
JOB PURPOSE: The Gender  Coordinator is expected to provide high-quality support to different units of the Country Office and to partners according to Oxfam’s standards and contribute to Oxfam’s global and regional learning aspirations through capacity building, coordination, mentoring and monitoring, making sure that Oxfam’s Response meets the gender minimum standards as well as promotes women’s voice, participation and leadership. The job holder will define and support the implementation of Gender Justice programming, and strengthen Gender Mainstreaming in humanitarian response, sustainable livelihoods, policy and advocacy/campaigning. This involves long term programming as well as practical support to humanitarian response.

Job Requirements:
  • University degree in international development, humanitarian, or gender studies.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in providing technical advice on gender mainstreaming and/or women’s rights programming; demonstrable understanding of gender mainstreaming and women’s rights; and experience in promoting women’s leadership and decision making in areas of sustainable livelihoods emergencies, and disaster risk reduction.
  • Substantial knowledge of the socio-economic and political context of the region and how it affects women’s rights and gender equality
  • Knowledge of Results-based management (RBM) approach and Performance measurement framework (PMF).
  • Knowledge and/or experience of common Oxfam norms objects, standards and tools
  • Experience using a computerized information management system (MS Word, Excel etc.)
